Water Wisdom: Why What You Drink Matters

Hey friends, Chef E here! Let’s talk about one of the most overlooked—but powerful—parts of your wellness routine: water. Not just how much you drink, but what kind of water you’re actually consuming. This might surprise you, but your tap water isn’t as clean or safe as we’ve been led to believe. And because water is the base for everything from your morning coffee to your soup pot, it’s worth knowing what’s in it—and how to upgrade it.

Water Wisdom: Why What You Drink Matters
What’s Actually in Tap Water?

Most tap water in the U.S. comes from lakes, rivers, or reservoirs and is then "treated" by public utilities before it reaches your home. But that treatment often involves adding chemicals like chlorine and fluoride, which come with their own health concerns.

Studies have shown that chlorine and its byproducts (like trihalomethanes) can act as carcinogens and disrupt cell health. Fluoride—marketed as a dental health booster—has been linked to thyroid disruption, bone issues, and even reproductive concerns.

Plus, our water supplies are often polluted with pesticide runoff, heavy metals, pharmaceuticals, and microplastics. Not quite the clean hydration we’re after!

The Good News: You’ve Got Options

Here’s how I keep clean water flowing in our house—and how you can too.

1. Find a Local Spring

When we lived in the PNW, we loved filling glass jugs straight from a local spring—crisp, fresh, mineral-rich, and totally free. Sites like Find A Spring can help you discover natural springs in your area. Nature’s original hydration station!

2. Spring Water Delivery

Now that we’re in Texas, we don’t have the same access—but we’ve found a new favorite: Mountain Valley Spring Water, which delivers nationwide. Look into your local delivery options for true spring water convenience.

3. Reverse Osmosis (RO)

We also refill BPA-free jugs with reverse osmosis water at our local store. RO filters out most contaminants, though it does remove beneficial minerals—so we always add trace minerals back in before drinking. Easy, effective, and affordable.

4. At-Home Filtration

Want control from the comfort of your kitchen? Berkey water filters are a fantastic, low-cost start. And if you’re ready to level up, whole-home systems can purify water from every faucet and showerhead.

5. Use Glass or Stainless Steel

Ditch the plastic. Not only can it leach toxins into your water, but it also adds to the microplastic pollution in our bodies and the planet. Opt for glass or stainless steel bottles and containers whenever you can.

6. Speak Kindly to Your Water (Yes, Really!)

Dr. Masaru Emoto’s research suggests that water reacts to energy, words, music, and intention. Beautiful crystals form in water exposed to love, gratitude, and prayer. It’s a sweet and simple reminder to treat your water—and your body—with reverence.
